A SAP-based information system MAKIS installed in the Lithuanian Customs was elected as the Best for Information Society 2007 at the Best Lithuanian ITTE Product awards organised by InfoBalt. MAKIS ─the customs accounting and monitoring system ─provides a real-time balance of customs duties and other taxes. The system automatically receives information from the State Tax Inspectorate, banks and other institutions and informs about outstanding duties. According to Rymantas Budgenas, the head of the Customs Department Tax Administration Division, the system is also useful to businesspeople: they no longer have to pay for each declaration individually as they can make all payments simultaneously once a month, transferring money to one of three accounts of the Customs Department at different banks as well as receive information about taxes and overpayments every month.
